Geocaching is a "worldwide adventure game" in which participants hide or "cache" items in weatherproof containers for others to find, using a GPS reference and sometimes clues. There are hundreds across the country: the closest one to you is probably no more than a mile away.

Anyone with a GPS (or even an OS map) can take part. The key rule is that if you take something from the cache, you leave something else behind.

When the book is available, John will "cache" copies in some of his favourite places. Details will be posted here and on www.geocaching.com. As he is both cryptic and an advocate of outdoor education, expect to have to use a bit of wit and skill to find them. You may need to bring a compass for some.

The idea is as follows:

1. Visit the location, take in the surroundings and have fun finding the book.

2. If you want to take the copy to read, replace it with a book (fiction or non-fiction) that inspired you to travel. It could be anything from The White Spider to Topsy and Tim Go Motorcycling!

3. Send John a message via this page (we will put a form on when the books are in place) to tell us what you have left, so we can update the site.

4. When you have finished reading the book, "cache" it in a place that you have been inspired to travel to in the UK at let us know! Again, we will add your new site to the list.
